But Clarks Landing Marina and the grounds have a rich history spanning over a century.
Roderick A. Clark
In 1862, Roderick A. Clark was one of the first in a group of volunteers to enlist in the Union Army. As a Sergeant in Company F, 14th/Regiment of the New Jersey Volunteers, he was wounded at the Battle of Manoxic Junction and thus began receiving an $18 per month pension from the U.S. Government in 1863.
16 years later on July 1, 1879, Mr. Clark purchased a wooded parcel of land on the Manasquan River for $1,141 (only one dollar more than the next best offer) and developed the area into one of the finest tourist spots in the area.
Clarks Landing began as a boat building business, but soon evolved into much more than that. Being located in such a gorgeous location, it became a popular recreational spot for families from all over the state. They would come for boating, fishing, crabbing, canoeing, swimming, picnicking and bathing.
ENTERTAINING IN THE LATE 1800’s
In 1894, a two-story pavilion was built on the riverfront. In 1896, a steam organ, an electric merry-go-round and a steam-powered ice cream machine were added. Due to the addition of outdoor music, another large pavilion and a dancing platform were constructed in 1903..
Rosia Clark, Roderick Clark’s son, joined the family business in the 1920’s. Sailing regattas were all the rage during this time period and friendly rivalries developed on the Manasquan River.
Subsequent owners of Clarks Landing included H.R. Bills and Leonard Patrick, who made some improvements with the addition of several summer cottages. The easy accessibility of Treasure Island, the canal and the upper reaches of the Manasquan mades Clarks the best place to spend a relaxing day!
CLARKS LANDING NOW
Just as Roderick Clark’s vision of Clarks Landing became a reality, a new vision exists today under the ownership and guidance of the Truesdale Family.
Now the Clarks Landing family consists of multiple marinas, boat sales facilities and wedding destinations throughout New Jersey and Maryland, with Point Pleasant always being the birthplace of the company. The catering hall in Point Pleasant finished construction in 2009 adding the ability for Clarks Landing to hold weddings with scenic views of the river. There are also plans that were approved in February 2017, to construct another permanent facility on the property to expand the wedding possibilities. The latest Marina has just opened early in 2017 on Kent Island and complements the two Maryland waterfront, full-service yacht yards in Chester and Shady Side. The latest wedding destination, The Mill Lakeside Manor, in Spring Lake New Jersey, joined the Clarks Landing family in February 2017.
